Makan-makan Trip Up North

Last Sunday (27 May) we went on a Makan-makan trip up North to a few places. It was a trip organised by my dad’s friend (also an ex-colleague) together with some people from a Buddhist temple. I’ve joined a similar trip a few years back and the attraction of a few ‘great’ food drew me back! One of the ‘star’ dish was the Buddha Jumped Over the Wall.

We have to wake up early, at 5.30am to get ready as we need to pick up my dad’s friend on the way before heading to the pick up point in PJ. The journey was supposed to start at 7.30am from the Buddhist temple at SS14 but the bus driver lost his way and only arrived at 8am. So we quickly settled into the bus and started our journey in less than 15 minutes.

For breakfast, we were given 2 vegetarian buns before the bus stopped at the R&R at Rawang so we can have other food if we wanted to. Then we continued our journey to the disabled children home (as part of the Buddhist temple’s mission) before we stop for the famous Big Head Prawn lunch inTanjong Tualang… a small town which used to be very popular during the tin mining era…. and this is where was my hometown before we sold away our ancesstors’ house to make way for a huge seafood restaurant.

After the children home, the driver lost his way again (stewpig driver were keeping mum but luckily dad suspected we were lost so he quickly gave the driver the directions) so we were late arriving to our lunch spot. When we finally arrived at around 12+ we were served immediately. These are the dishes we had….

Then we moved on to visit Kellie Castle which was nearby Batu Gajah. In the initially itinerary, we were supposed to visit the Tin Mining Museum on board a dredger but have to cancel the trip due to short of time. So after spending around 45 mins at Kellie Castle, we moved on to our next destination, Telok Anson to buy the famous ‘heong pheah’ a type of fragrant ‘thousand layers biscuit’.

It was almost 5pm when we finally left Telok Anson to our last destination for dinner at Kuala Selangor. It was a long drive… and the stewpig driver actually used the old road and not the North South Highway and we were caught in so many traffic jams! We only arrived at the restaurant around 7.30pm, which was an hour and half late! We were supposed to stop by Sekinjang to buy fish and since we were already so late, we have to forgo the idea. So, the tour guide brought us to the stall next to the restaurant we are having dinner to shop a bit…. but there were not many fresh fishes left so we only get those dried stuff like dried prawns, salted fish and prawn crackers…

We left the Kuala Selangor restaurant at almost 9pm. Then we arrived at the Buddhist temple at around 10.30pm and finally home at almost 11.30pm! You can say that we are in the bus for almost 70% of the entire trip… 

For this trip, both makan venues’ food are so-so only. But then again, what can you ask for if you only pay RM110/pax?
