Today marks the last day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, which is called Chap Goh Meh by Penangites (people of Penang) which simply translate as the 15th night. Today will be the last day for tossing the ever popular Yu-Sheng (raw fish) and to savour the popular traditional dessert, pengat (a sweet dessert of sweet potatoes, yam, banana and red rubies cooked in coconut milk and gula Melaka).
Before I was married, I’ve never really celebrate this particular day in any elaborate style as my mom do not practice most of the cultural practices so it hold nothing significant to me. Until I was married, to a Penangite, then I was introduced to all these cultural practices which were all so new to me…
There were some cultural road shows in the city since last night but we did not want to jam with the huge crowd so we did not make our way there. However, we passed by this evening and saw the huge gathered near the Penang’s Little India area. PiggyBeng had wanted to bring Darrius to enjoy the event but he still has not had his dinner so we forgo the idea (we had an elaborate lunch at a relative’s place but Darrius did not eat much).
Tonight, there will be a very interesting event for the singles happening by the river too. Single ladies and men who wished/hoped to find their life partners will congregate at one of the river to toss mandarin oranges into the water. They will write their names and phone numbers on the oranges and hopefully, fate will match them…
Well, that’s all folks! We have came to the end of the 2-week long festival celebration and once again our lives will go back to normay till the next festival….
